EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) bidding is advancing for the Al-Zawra combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) independent power producer (IPP) project in the Emirate of Ajman, UAE, it is reported. Following the issuance of an EPC request for proposal (RFP) by the developer in June 2026, five consortiums were reportedly preparing bids as of August 31.
The project is being developed solely by Abu Dhabi-based EtihadWE (Etihad Water and Electricity) as a new CCGT plant, with power reportedly to be purchased by Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) upon completion. The existing 200MW gas-fired facility on site, based on two GE 9E turbines, is expected to be decommissioned and sold through a separate asset auction, which was reportedly announced on June 9, 2026.
The new generation capacity is planned at 2,500-2,700MW, it is reported. The EPC RFP was issued in June 2026, and the bid submission deadline and contractor selection schedule have not yet been disclosed. The auction announcement date for the existing 200MW facility is confirmed as June 9, 2026.
The UAE continues to replace aging small-scale gas-fired plants with large CCGT facilities to meet rising power demand from data centers and industry, and the Ajman Al-Zawra project is reportedly part of this broader power supply expansion strategy.
A series of projects replacing aging gas-fired generation with large CCGT facilities are underway across the Middle East, intensifying competition in the related EPC and gas turbine supply markets. Rising power demand from data centers and other new sources is likely to continue driving investment in generation capacity.
