CPChem and QatarEnergy’s Golden Triangle Polymers Complex in Orange, Texas Enters Startup Phase

The Golden Triangle Polymers complex in Orange, Texas, jointly invested in by CPChem (Chevron Phillips Chemical) and QatarEnergy, has reportedly entered its commissioning and startup phase. Total investment is $8.5 billion, with CPChem holding 51 percent and QatarEnergy 49 percent.

The complex consists of a world-scale ethane cracker (2.08 million t/y) and two HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) units (1 million t/y each). As of 2026, the facility has entered the commissioning and startup phase, with full operation targeted for 2027, it is reported.

Ethane cracker capacity is 2.08 million t/y, with combined HDPE capacity of 2 million t/y across two units. Total investment is $8.5 billion, with ownership split 51 percent CPChem and 49 percent QatarEnergy. Full operation is targeted for 2027.

The investment is reported to build large-scale ethylene and polyethylene production capacity leveraging low-cost, shale gas-derived ethane feedstock along the U.S. Gulf Coast, and is cited as a representative example of QatarEnergy’s equity-based entry into the U.S. petrochemical market.

As the world-scale ethane cracker enters commissioning, North American ethylene and polyethylene supply volumes are expected to increase significantly once full operation begins, which could affect the global polyethylene market’s supply structure.

Whether the 2027 full-operation target is actually met, the sequencing of individual unit startups during commissioning, and initial utilization rates warrant continued monitoring once confirmed.
