ATCO’s Yellowhead Mainline Pipeline Approved, Construction Begins to Supply Feed Gas for Dow’s Ethylene Cracker

Canada’s ATCO (Canadian Utilities) has reportedly received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for its Yellowhead Mainline pipeline project and begun construction immediately. The project cost is reported at CAD 2.9 billion.

The pipeline runs approximately 235km with a transport capacity of 1 billion cubic feet (Bcf) per day, and will supply feed gas to Dow’s Path2Zero ethylene cracker, a $9 billion investment. AUC approval was granted on July 20, 2026, with operation targeted for Q4 2027.

The project is reported to expand pipeline infrastructure in Alberta to support the feed gas supply chain for a major petrochemical investment, Dow’s Path2Zero ethylene cracker.

This pipeline is a representative example of upstream and midstream infrastructure directly linked to a downstream petrochemical investment (an ethylene cracker), illustrating a trend in which major petrochemical projects also drive related pipeline and infrastructure investment.

Whether the Q4 2027 operation target is actually met, and how progress on this pipeline aligns with the completion and start-up schedule of Dow’s Path2Zero ethylene cracker, warrant continued monitoring once confirmed.
