Two reactors using China’s indigenously developed third-generation nuclear technology, Hualong One (HPR1000), have reportedly entered commercial operation and grid connection in quick succession. Unit 2 of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant in Huizhou, Guangdong Province — operated by China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) — reportedly began official power generation on August 3, while Unit 3 of the Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant in Hainan Province — developed by China Huaneng — reportedly achieved grid connection on August 1.
The Taipingling plant broke ground in October 2020, and with Unit 2 now online, Phase 1 (Units 1 and 2) of the first Hualong One project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has reportedly been fully completed. Changjiang Unit 3 is reportedly the first Hualong One unit built in Hainan’s free trade port. Both projects are noted as applying Hualong One, a third-generation pressurized water reactor technology for which China holds full independent intellectual property rights.
