Energy Vault to Deploy 1.25GW of Off-Grid Power Infrastructure for Texas AI Data Center

Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. of the United States has announced a strategic agreement to deploy 1.25GW (gigawatts) of off-grid, integrated power infrastructure for a hyperscale artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Texas. The name of the hyperscaler (large-scale data center operator) placing the order was not disclosed, it is reported. Energy Vault is a US energy infrastructure company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and the agreement is reported to have been signed with a hyperscaler operating a data center in Texas.

According to an announcement on August 7, Energy Vault will supply its grid-forming power conversion system (PCS), battery energy storage system (BESS), and AI-based infrastructure control software, while power generation will be provided through Caterpillar gas gensets, it is reported. The power generation EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) partner was referred to only as a “leading power generation EPC” partner, with its specific name undisclosed and therefore unconfirmed. Energy Vault originally built its business around gravity-based energy storage technology and has since expanded into integrated power infrastructure solutions combining battery storage, power conversion and AI control software, it is reported.

It is reported that surging power demand from AI data centers is driving growing demand for off-grid, integrated generation and storage infrastructure that does not rely on existing transmission and distribution networks. This agreement is notable for combining gas generation, battery storage and AI control software into a single integrated contract, it is reported, illustrating Energy Vault’s shift from a storage equipment supplier toward an integrated power infrastructure solutions provider. Implications for Korea’s Industry

As demand grows for off-grid power infrastructure serving AI data centers, it is reported that this could represent a market opportunity for Korean companies supplying gas turbines and battery storage equipment.

Whether the name of the power generation EPC partner will be disclosed, and the timing of the actual initial deployment, are reported to be worth watching.
