China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC), a Chinese state-owned energy construction firm, has won an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract worth approximately $1.7 billion to build the Taweelah C combined-cycle power plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE, it is reported. Siemens Energy’s latest large-scale gas turbines are set to be supplied for the project.
The Taweelah C project involves the construction of a new CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) plant with a capacity of 2.6GW, according to the report. Siemens Energy has been confirmed to supply three SGT5-9000HL gas turbines (593MW class), two steam turbines (450MW class), and five generators. The SGT5-9000HL is a large H-class gas turbine developed by Siemens Energy, primarily used in high-efficiency combined-cycle power generation, it is reported. The construction period is estimated at around 32 months, and once completed, the plant is expected to support power demand from nearby industrial zones and data centers in Abu Dhabi.
The UAE continues to pursue new large-scale gas combined-cycle plants in response to growing power demand from data centers and industry, and the Taweelah C project is seen as part of this broader power supply expansion strategy. The Abu Dhabi government is also reported to be strengthening its stable power supply infrastructure to attract AI and cloud industry investment.
Implications for Korea’s Industry
Chinese firms continue to win large EPC contracts in the Middle East power sector on the strength of price competitiveness, suggesting that Korean power EPC and equipment firms should explore opportunities to participate in the turbine supply chain or export equipment.
The construction start date, the actual delivery schedule for the Siemens Energy gas turbines, and how the plant will be integrated into the UAE power grid after completion are cited as points to watch.
