S-Oil to Invest KRW 263 Billion in Gas Turbine Generator Expansion at Onsan Plant in Ulsan, Raising Self-Generation Ratio to 42%

S-Oil has announced that it will invest KRW 263 billion to expand its natural gas self-generation facilities, specifically gas turbine generators (GTG), at its Onsan plant in Ulsan. It is reported that once the expansion is complete, the plant’s self-generation ratio will rise from the current level of approximately 10% to 42%.

Through this investment, S-Oil is reported to introduce two new gas turbine generators (GTG) along with two waste heat recovery boilers. The target completion date is reported to be the end of 2026, while the manufacturer of the equipment has not been disclosed.

The investment for this expansion amounts to KRW 263 billion, with the announcement reported to have been made on August 25, 2026. It is reported that once the two newly added GTG units are combined with the two 150MW GTG units introduced through the Shaheen Project — bringing the total to four units in operation — the Onsan plant’s self-generation ratio will rise from approximately 10% to 42%, with an expected reduction of approximately 160,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Expanding self-generation facilities is reported to be a method used to reduce dependence on external power supply while improving energy efficiency through waste heat recovery, serving as a means for refining and petrochemical plants to simultaneously pursue stable power supply and greenhouse gas reduction.

As an increasing number of refining and petrochemical plants combine gas turbine-based self-generation facilities with waste heat recovery systems to raise energy self-sufficiency, this case is viewed as reflecting a broader trend of expanding orders for related equipment alongside growing energy infrastructure investment that factors in carbon emission reduction.

Points to watch include whether the manufacturer of the newly installed GTG equipment and a more specific construction schedule will be disclosed, and whether the planned expansion of the self-generation ratio will proceed as scheduled in conjunction with the operational timeline of the Shaheen Project’s GTG units.
