Korea Southern Power’s Hadong Coal Plant to Convert to 1GW LNG Combined Cycle, Doosan Enerbility Consortium Selected

Korea Southern Power has reportedly selected a consortium of Doosan Enerbility and SNT Energy as the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractor for the project converting the coal-fired Hadong Units 2 and 3 (1,000MW) into an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) combined cycle power plant.

The project reportedly involves demolishing the existing coal-fired facilities at Hadong Units 2 and 3 and building a new LNG combined cycle power plant on the site, under a turnkey engineering-procurement-installation-construction contract, it is reported.

The converted facility will have a capacity of approximately 1GW, with the final contract to be signed in September 2026, construction to begin in January 2027, and completion targeted for December 2029, it is reported.

In line with the government’s energy transition policy, projects converting aging coal-fired plants to LNG combined cycle facilities are reportedly being pursued across the country, with the Hadong conversion introduced as a so-called “just transition” model project.

As the conversion of aging coal-fired plants to LNG continues, this is viewed as a case that could lead to sustained EPC awards for domestic gas turbine and combined cycle power generation.

Whether the final contract is signed in September, and the timing of the confirmed gas turbine model selection, are worth watching.
