Vietnam’s Bac Ninh province has reportedly held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 650MW An Khanh-Bac Giang thermal power plant, in response to surging electricity demand from its semiconductor and electronics industrial parks.
The EPC contractor is reportedly Bach Dang Construction Corporation, with the site covering about 66.4 hectares, it is reported. Commercial operation is targeted for June 2029.
Total investment is reportedly about VND300 trillion (about $1.15 billion), with annual generation expected to reach about 3.9 billion kWh once completed. Northern Vietnam’s peak power demand in 2026 was reportedly about 25,000MW, up 28.5% year-on-year.
As power demand surges in Bac Ninh, home to semiconductor and electronics firms including Samsung, power generation capacity is reportedly being expanded to support this growth.
This is viewed as a case illustrating how rising power demand from Southeast Asian manufacturing clusters is driving related power infrastructure investment.
The pace of construction progress and whether the 2029 commercial operation target is met are worth watching.
