Topsoe Wins FEED Contract from Uniper for Sweden E-Methanol Plant

Danish engineering company Topsoe announced on September 1, 2026 that it has won a FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) contract from German energy company Uniper for an e-methanol plant in Östersund, in northern Sweden. The project is reported to be part of the NorthStarH2 project.

The plant is designed to produce approximately 115,000 tonnes per year of e-methanol — methanol produced using hydrogen generated from renewable electricity — using Topsoe’s ModuLite™ modular e-methanol production technology, it is reported. A Final Investment Decision (FID) is expected in 2028, according to the report.

The Östersund e-methanol plant in Sweden has a production capacity of approximately 115,000 tonnes per year. The client is Uniper, and the FEED contract was awarded to Topsoe. The applied technology is Topsoe’s ModuLite™ e-methanol technology, and FID is expected in 2028. The contract was announced on September 1, 2026.

The NorthStarH2 project is reported to be linked to Sweden’s policy of expanding renewable-based hydrogen and e-fuel production. The use of modular technology is said to be aimed at reducing construction time and cost for smaller-scale e-methanol plants.

The progress of renewable hydrogen-based e-methanol production projects to the FEED stage in Europe illustrates both the chemical and energy industry’s investment trend toward decarbonized fuel demand from shipping and aviation, and the growing commercialization of modular process technology.

Key points to watch include the timing of the Final Investment Decision expected in 2028 and whether a subsequent main construction contract will be awarded.
