Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has reportedly approved a $6.2 billion final investment decision (FID) for the development of the Umm Shaif gas cap.
The project reportedly involves ADNOC together with partners TotalEnergies, Eni and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), and is targeted for completion by 2030 with a goal of producing more than 600 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas and associated liquids. Among the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) packages, the gas compression facilities are reportedly being built by L&T Energy Hydrocarbon/Lamprell and McDermott, while the onshore gas processing package at Das Island has reportedly been awarded to China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Company (CPECC). Separately, a $365 million drilling program under which ADNOC Drilling will drill 14 wells over approximately 18 months is also reportedly underway.
The total investment is reported at $6.2 billion (about AED 22.6 billion), of which the three EPC packages combined are valued at $5.1 billion. The FID was announced on July 21, 2026, it is reported.
The FID is viewed as an extension of ADNOC’s gas growth strategy, expanding gas field development together with domestic and international partners, it is reported.
Awarding a large-scale gas field development project across a multinational partnership and multiple EPC contractors is seen as a case illustrating how supply-chain participation opportunities in Middle East gas development projects are being spread across several engineering and construction firms.
Progress toward the targeted 2030 production start and whether additional EPC or drilling contracts are awarded are worth watching.
