Asahi Kasei, Mitsui Chemicals and Mitsubishi Chemical have reportedly agreed on a 45:45:10 stake split for the consolidation of ethylene production facilities in western Japan.
The agreement follows a basic agreement reached in January 2026, and reportedly involves closing the Asahi Kasei-Mitsubishi Chemical joint venture ethylene facility (AMEC) in the Mizushima area by 2030 and consolidating production into the ethylene facility of Osaka Petrochemical Industries, a Mitsui Chemicals subsidiary. The stake split was agreed at 45% for Mitsui Chemicals, 45% for Mitsubishi Chemical and 10% for Asahi Kasei, with a final joint operating company agreement to be signed at a later date, it is reported.
The stake agreement was announced on May 12, 2026, it is reported. The specific production capacity of the consolidated facility and the investment amount have not been disclosed.
The consolidation is viewed as part of a strategy by Japan’s petrochemical industry to maintain competitiveness amid declining demand by closing aging crackers and consolidating production facilities, it is reported.
Multiple chemical companies consolidating ethylene production facilities through a shared equity structure is seen as a case illustrating an industry restructuring trend in which joint operation, rather than individual companies maintaining facilities on their own, is pursued to improve efficiency in a maturing market.
The timing of the final joint operating company agreement and the specific consolidation schedule are worth watching.
