Avantium N.V. is reported to have produced the first FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) at its flagship plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, on 28 September 2026. The plant is described as the world’s first commercial-scale FDCA production facility. According to the company, commercial sales are expected to begin at the end of 2026.
The plant applies Avantium’s proprietary YXY® technology, which is said to produce FDCA from plant-based feedstocks and to use it as the building block for PEF (polyethylene furanoate) polymer. The company reportedly has moved the plant from commissioning to operational start-up, and its focus is now on optimizing operations, producing additional FDCA, completing qualification activities and preparing for commercial sales.
CEO Tom van Aken is reported to have described the first FDCA production as a significant milestone for the company. Avantium is also said to be in licensing discussions with prospective partners for the YXY technology.
The first FDCA batch was produced on 28 September 2026. Ramp-up to full capacity is expected to take 12 to 24 months after start-up, and commercial sales are expected to begin at the end of 2026. The annual production capacity and the investment amount have not been disclosed in this announcement.
FDCA is a key monomer for bio-based polymers such as PEF, and the start-up is said to show the technology moving from demonstration to commercial-scale production.
First, the start-up of the first commercial-scale FDCA facility illustrates bio-based chemical materials moving beyond pilot scale into commercial production. Second, the reported 12 to 24 months needed to reach full capacity underlines that stabilizing ramp-up is a central challenge in commercializing new processes. Third, with licensing discussions under way, the flagship plant’s operating record may become a key reference in future negotiations. Fourth, for the refining and petrochemical industries, the project offers a gauge of how quickly alternative monomer options to petroleum-based ones may be commercialized.
First, whether commercial sales begin as planned at the end of 2026. Second, whether stable operation and product qualification proceed smoothly during the 12-to-24-month ramp-up. Third, whether the annual capacity and investment figures, not yet disclosed, are made public. Fourth, whether the YXY licensing discussions lead to a signed agreement.
