Construction Begins on Algerian Section of Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, Targeting 30 Bcm/Year Capacity

Construction has reportedly begun on the Algerian section of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), which will connect Nigeria, Niger and Algeria.

The pipeline spans a total of 4,128km, consisting of 1,037km in Nigeria, 841km in Niger and 2,310km in Algeria, with Sonatrach leading construction and Nigeria’s NNPC and Niger’s Sonidep participating as joint development partners, it is reported. A groundbreaking ceremony for the Algerian section was reportedly held on June 4, 2026, in Aoulef, Adrar Province, Algeria.

The pipeline is designed for an annual transport capacity of 30 billion cubic meters (bcm), with total project costs reported at approximately $13 billion. The final completion target has reportedly been adjusted to sometime between the late 2020s and early 2030s.

The groundbreaking is viewed as a case marking the entry into actual construction of a long-distance pipeline project connecting West African gas production areas with European markets, it is reported.

The sequential groundbreaking of a large multi-country pipeline project under a phased investment structure is seen as a case illustrating that gas transport infrastructure expansion in the African region is proceeding as a long-term undertaking.

The timing of groundbreaking for the Nigeria and Niger sections, and further clarification of the overall completion timeline, are worth watching.
