Enbridge Breaks Ground on Sunrise Expansion Program for Canada’s West Coast Gas Pipeline

Enbridge has reportedly broken ground on the Sunrise Expansion Program, an expansion of its West Coast natural gas pipeline in British Columbia, Canada.

The project reportedly involves looping approximately 140km (across 11 sections) alongside the existing West Coast pipeline and adding new compression facilities, with the goal of increasing transport capacity on the T-South segment by 300 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d), it is reported. The project reportedly received federal approval in April 2026 and broke ground in July 2026.

The investment is reported at CA$4 billion, with a targeted startup of late 2028. The project is expected to create approximately 2,500 construction jobs, it is reported.

The expansion is viewed as an effort to increase gas transport capacity in western Canada to meet rising gas demand, it is reported.

Expanding an existing pipeline through looping is seen as a case of increasing gas transport capacity with lower permitting and environmental review burdens compared with building an entirely new route.

Construction progress toward the targeted late-2028 startup is worth watching.
