INPEX’s Abadi LNG Project Reaches 80% FEED Completion as Onshore EPC Tendering Advances

The front-end engineering design (FEED) for INPEX’s Abadi LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) project in Indonesia has reportedly reached approximately 80% completion, with EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) tendering for onshore facilities now underway.

The project is operated by INPEX Masela together with Pertamina Hulu Energi and PETRONAS Masela, and the onshore LNG plant is planned with a capacity of 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), it is reported.

As of August 2026, FEED progress stood at approximately 80%, with completion targeted for the fall, it is reported. Onshore EPC tendering, covering a 180km gas export pipeline and subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF), reportedly began in July 2026, with a Technip Energies-JGC consortium and a KBR-Samsung E&A-Adhi Karya consortium among the bidders.

On the offtake side, the project has reportedly secured about 6 million tonnes of its 8-million-tonne target through agreements in principle (AiP) with bp, Shell, PGN and PLN.

The onshore LNG plant has a planned capacity of 9.5 Mtpa, with natural gas production of approximately 150 million cubic feet per day, it is reported. INPEX’s 2026 growth investment is reported at ¥850 billion, more than double the ¥387 billion recorded the previous year. The final investment decision (FID) is targeted for mid-2027, it is reported.

The project is viewed as part of Japan’s strategy to expand investment in overseas LNG projects to secure long-term LNG supply, it is reported.

A large LNG project’s FEED reaching an advanced stage while onshore EPC tendering gets underway is seen as a case illustrating how projects approaching a final investment decision (FID) are being concretized in stages.

The outcome of onshore EPC contract awards and whether the mid-2027 FID target is met are worth watching.
