QatarEnergy NGL-5 Train Project Awards Telecoms and Security Systems Subcontract to US Firm

QatarEnergy’s Mesaieed NGL-5 (Natural Gas Liquids Train 5) expansion project has awarded a telecommunications, wireless and security systems subcontract to Houston-based Nessco, industry publication MEED reported on September 3. The award is part of the broader EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract won last October by a consortium of India’s L&T Energy Hydrocarbon and Greece’s CCC, with detailed subcontracts being awarded in stages as the project targets startup in the second quarter of 2028, it is reported.

The NGL-5 train is one of Qatar’s largest natural gas liquids processing facilities, planned to process 350 million cubic feet per day of rich associated gas, it is said. The overall EPC contract was awarded to the L&T Energy Hydrocarbon-CCC consortium last October, and the newly announced telecoms and security subcontract stems from the detailed implementation of that contract, with Nessco reportedly set to handle telecoms, wireless communications and security systems construction.

The overall EPC contract is valued at approximately $2.5 billion, with processing capacity reported at 350 million cubic feet per day of rich associated gas. Startup is targeted for the second quarter of 2028, while the specific value of the telecoms and security subcontract has not been disclosed.

QatarEnergy continues to expand downstream NGL processing capacity in tandem with its North Field gas production expansion plans. The NGL-5 train expansion is reported to be an extension of this downstream infrastructure investment.

Large-scale NGL processing projects illustrate how, beyond the main EPC contract, detailed subcontracts such as telecoms and security are awarded in stages. This reflects a broader trend in which the supply chain for major plant projects is expanding from a main-contractor-centric model to include a wider range of specialized subcontractors.

Key points to watch include the status of remaining detailed subcontract awards for the NGL-5 train and whether the second-quarter 2028 startup target is met.
