Spanish engineering firm Técnicas Reunidas has reportedly been awarded an onshore gas processing facility construction package for the Dorra gas field development, a joint project of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in their shared Neutral Zone. The contract is valued at approximately $1.65 billion, with the client identified as Al-Khafji Joint Operations (KJO), a joint venture between Saudi Aramco subsidiary AGOC (Aramco Gulf Operations Company) and Kuwait’s KGOC (Kuwait Gulf Oil Company).
The Dorra gas field is a major offshore natural gas field located in the Neutral Zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The newly awarded package covers an onshore gas processing facility to be built near Khafji on the Saudi side. The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) package 3 awarded to Técnicas Reunidas covers construction of the onshore processing facility, while offshore production facilities and pipelines are reportedly being handled through separate contract packages. The specific gas processing technology or licensor has not been disclosed.
The Neutral Zone is an area jointly administered by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and the Dorra gas field has long stood as a flagship joint resource development project between the two countries. This onshore EPC award signals that the field’s development has moved from the design phase into full-scale construction.
Implications for Korea’s Industry
Direct participation by Korean companies in this package has not been confirmed. Given the continued flow of gas processing plant awards in the Middle East, Korean EPC firms’ prospects for winning subsequent packages warrant continued monitoring.
Key items to watch include the progress of remaining packages covering offshore production facilities and pipelines, as well as the construction schedule for the onshore processing facility.
