Singapore’s Keppel Sakra Cogen Plant Begins Commercial Operations With Hydrogen Co-Firing Capability

Keppel’s Sakra Cogen plant has reportedly begun commercial operations as Singapore’s first hydrogen-compatible cogeneration plant.

The plant is a 600MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility reportedly designed to co-fire up to 30% hydrogen. Commercial operations began in May 2026, and the plant has reportedly secured 100% of its contracted volumes for 2026-2027.

The plant has a generation capacity of 600MW, and its startup is reported to increase Keppel’s overall generation capacity by approximately 45%.

The plant’s startup is viewed as part of Singapore’s effort to prepare for a low-carbon transition by introducing hydrogen co-firing technology into gas turbine power generation, it is reported.

Retrofitting existing gas turbine generation facilities with hydrogen co-firing capability is seen as a case illustrating how a low-carbon transition of existing power infrastructure can be pursued in stages without large-scale new investment.

Future plans to expand the hydrogen co-firing ratio and the development of a hydrogen supply chain are worth watching.
