Summit Midstream Reaches FID on Double E Compression Expansion, Adding 900 MMcf/d Toward Waha

U.S.-based Summit Midstream has reached a final investment decision (FID) to expand compression facilities on the Double E pipeline, increasing capacity from the Delaware Basin in Texas and New Mexico to the Waha hub, it is reported. The FID was announced on August 31, 2026.

The expansion involves building a new bidirectional mainline compressor station, adding approximately 900 MMcf/d (million cubic feet per day) of forward-haul capacity, it is reported. The ownership structure is reported as Summit Midstream 70% and an ExxonMobil subsidiary 30%. A new long-term take-or-pay contract covers 200 MMcf/d, with total open-season commitments reported at approximately 550 MMcf/d. The start-up target is the fourth quarter of 2028.

The expansion cost is reported at approximately $100 million based on Summit’s 70% share, with total project cost not separately disclosed. Added forward-haul capacity is approximately 900 MMcf/d, the new long-term contract volume is 200 MMcf/d, and open-season commitments total approximately 550 MMcf/d. The start-up target is Q4 2028.

As gas production in the Delaware Basin continues to grow, the need to resolve transport bottlenecks to the Waha hub has increased, and this compression expansion is reported to be a response to that broader supply growth trend.

Incremental capacity expansion through compression additions on existing pipelines can resolve bottlenecks in a relatively shorter timeframe than new pipeline construction, and this approach is likely to continue being used in U.S. shale basin infrastructure investment.
