Vietnam’s First LNG Combined-Cycle Power Plant, Nhon Trach 3 & 4, Begins Commercial Operation with GE Vernova 9HA.02 Gas Turbines

It is reported that Nhon Trach 3 and 4, Vietnam’s first LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) combined-cycle power plant, have entered commercial operation using GE Vernova’s 9HA.02 gas turbines. Nhon Trach 3 is reported to have received commercial operation certification on November 19, 2025, and Nhon Trach 4 subsequently began commercial operation as well, with GE Vernova officially announcing the milestone on January 5, 2026. The combined capacity of the two units is reported at 1.6GW, with an investment of approximately US$1.4 billion.

Nhon Trach 3 and 4 are CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) power plants located in Dong Nai Province, approximately 70km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, with PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power) reported as the owner and investor. The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) work is reported to have been carried out by a consortium of Samsung C&T and Lilama. The plant is reported to use GE Vernova’s 9HA.02 gas turbines, marking the first application of an H-class turbine in Vietnam and the country’s first LNG-based power plant.

The combined capacity of Nhon Trach 3 and 4 is reported at 1.6GW, with an investment of approximately US$1.4 billion.

Vietnam’s power generation structure has historically centered on coal and hydropower, but the start of commercial operation at Nhon Trach 3 and 4 is regarded as marking the first commercialization of LNG-based power generation in the country. This is interpreted as reflecting a trend toward expanding the share of gas turbine-based power generation in Vietnam’s power sector.

The new application of an H-class gas turbine in Southeast Asia is seen as a reference point for the expansion of LNG-based power projects in the region and for the competitive landscape among related EPC firms and turbine manufacturers. It is cited as a case that EPC contractors and turbine manufacturers may use as a reference when bidding for similar LNG combined-cycle projects in the future.

How the operational track record of Nhon Trach 3 and 4 will influence the awarding of additional LNG power projects in Vietnam, as well as whether related LNG terminal and supply contract expansions follow, are cited as points to watch.
